About Beechmont

Beechmont is a historic neighborhood, founded in 1892, in the south end of Louisville. It is near several local landmarks like Churchill Downs, Iroquois Park and the Iroquois Amphitheater, and the Louisville International Airport. Within the neighborhood, we have many amenities like the Iroquois Library, the Beechmont Community Center, and an old-fashioned, main street-style business district on Woodlawn Avenue that’s home to many local businesses.

In a recent survey, we asked residents what they like best about the neighborhood, and these three themes kept coming up:

Diversity

Beechmont is culturally, as well as economically, diverse. It’s common to hear conversations in other languages at the coffee shop, and our library is known for its programs like the English Conversation Club, which allows those learning English to practice with fluent speakers. We also have a range of housing options, from large historic homes to affordable apartments.

Walkability

Southern Parkway runs right through the heart of our neighborhood, and you’ll almost always see walkers, runners, and bikers there. The wide, tree-lined paths provide a safe space for recreation away from the traffic. Most streets in the neighborhood feature well-maintained sidewalks, which make it easy for pedestrians to get around. A variety of local races pass through the neighborhood, like the Papa John’s 10 Miler, the Derby Festival Marathon, and the IRONMAN Louisville.

Friendliness

The walkability and variety of gathering places make it easy to get to know your neighbors in Beechmont. It’s pretty common to see people waving at each other and stopping to chat. Residents are always eager to welcome new people and businesses to the neighborhood.
